At least 11 residents in Kayunga District are nursing flesh wounds after debris from their collapsing houses fell on them during a rainstorm
The devastating rainstorm which swept through two villages in Kayinga Town Council also left hundreds of residents homeless.
Those injured are currently receiving treatment from Kayunga Regional Referral Hospital.
According to Mr Abu Ssebuliba, the chairperson of Kisaaba Village, the Friday afternoon rainstorm also destroyed several acres of crops including; beans ,maize ,coffee and famine is looming in the area. The affected residents are in the villages of Namagabi and Kisaaba , where many of the houses and gardens were completely razed to the ground .
“ The affected households are in dire need of relief items such as iron sheets, household items and relief food,” he said
Area Member of Parliament and State minister for finance,Mr Amos Lugoloobi who visited the affected residents on Saturday blamed the disaster on climate change urged residents to construct strong houses which can withstand such catastrophes.
“I have discovered that many of the destroyed houses were poorly constructed. Despite the financial hardships you are going through, try to build strong houses with a ring beam,” the legislator advised.
He said he had already informed the Office of the Prime Minister which handles relief donations to come to the rescue of the victims .
“But as we wait for the government support, I am personally going to offer Shs20m to be used in reconstruction of the destroyed houses,” Mr Lugoloobi said.
