According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson , Patrick Onyango, the crash happened at about 5:30 p.m when a white Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UAY 514M, lost control and rammed into a swamp .

“The vehicle was allegedly coming from a campaign in Kasawo Subcounty with an unknown number of passengers on board. Upon reaching Lusera Village, the driver lost control of the vehicle in a swampy area, causing passengers to fall off. The vehicle remained stuck in the mud,” Onyango said in the statement.

Police confirmed that 14 of the injured have been identified, while three others remain unidentified and were rushed to Kayunga Referral Hospital for treatment.
The victims range from a 6-year-old boy to a 66-year-old man, most of them residents of Kasawo and surrounding villages.

Onyango noted that the incident adds to a rising trend of motor crashes in the region.
“This is part of a worrying increase in accidents we have been recording on rural roads, many of which involve overloaded vehicles and drivers operating in poor road conditions,” he said.

Uganda Police’s annual crime report for 2024 recorded over 20,000 road crashes nationwide, with more than 3,500 fatalities and tens of thousands injured.
