2026 polls: 70 suspects arrested during presidential nominations

The police in Kampala Metropolitan area are holding 79 suspects who were arrested during the two-day presidential nomination exercise.
The exercise held on September 23–24, 2025, at the Electoral Commission Offices in Lubowa, Kajjansi Town Council.


According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the exercise proceeded peacefully, with security successfully maintaining order despite minor incidents.
However on the first day of the exercise on Tuesday , 44 suspects were arrested at President Museveni’s rally in Kololo for phone snatching and pickpocketing.

They were detained at Jinja Road Police Station pending prosecution. On the second day, Wednesday , 35 suspects were arrested in Kajjansi for disobeying security guidelines, including Allan Ssewanyana, MP for Makindye West. Onyango confirmed that Mr Ssewanyana and his group were later released on Police bond.


In addition, several supporters of opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi were arrested for reckless riding and assaulting innocent people. Security also impounded two motor vehicles and 40 motorcycles.

“Despite these incidents, the nomination exercise concluded without any serious incidents reported,” Onyango stated. The nomination process paved the way for eight successful presidential candidates to be sure of taking part in next year’s General Election .

These include Yoweri Museveni of National Resistance Movement ,the incumbent and long serving president of Uganda having been in office for nearly 40 years , Robert Kyagulanyi of NUP , Gen Mugisha Muntu of Alliance for National Transformation ,Joseph Mabirizi of Conservative Party –all making a second attempt to dislodge Museveni , Robert Kasibante of National Peasants Party , Mubarak Munyagwa of Common Man’s Party , Frank Kabinga Bulira of Revolutionary Peoples Party and Nathan Nandala Mafabi of Forum for Democratic Change –all entry entrants in the race .
