KAMPALA. The National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has submitted more signatures to the Electoral Commission (EC) just less than 12 hours to the nominations kick off on Tuesday.
Although the EC wants NUP to bring more 18,000 from 18 districts the party secretary General Lewis Rubongoya said they had submitted thousands more.
“Thousands of more signatures submitted to the EC this morning for the nomination of HE Bobi Wine .
We shall leave no stone unturned. Grateful to the NUP regional sub regional and district teams for the amazing work done in a very short time! Grateful to all people, some of whom are still coming to the NUP headquarters because they consider this a noble duty ,” Mr Rubongoya posted on his X
Despite NUP submitting more signatures the EC has the discretion to determine whether they are genuine or fake –something that may affect Bobi’s bid for president. Also, if Bobi Wine is cleared today, Monday ,it is no impossible for him get nominated on Tuesday ,on the same day as NRM flag bearer and incumbent Yoweri Museveni , as earlier announced by NUP .
Others aspirants still having hurdles to be cleared for nominations include among others; Rtd Gen Gregory Mugisha Muntua , the card holder for Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), Common People Party’s Mubarak Munyagwa and Ecological Party’s Muhammad Nsereko . The final list of presidential candidates will be announced after the nomination period closes next week.(September 23-24) . According to EC records, at least 30 presidential hopefuls had returned nomination documents to EC by last Thursday.
Under Ugandan law, a presidential candidate must present at least 100 registered voters from at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts to qualify for nomination.
Failure to meet this threshold disqualifies a candidate from appearing on the ballot unless corrected before the deadline.
The development adds to the intense race ahead of the 2026 General Elections, where opposition parties have accused the EC of applying strict standards selectively.
