
KAMPALA. The Electoral Commission(EC) has released the full timetable for nominating eligible candidates eying various political positions in next year’s general elections.
According to the new timetable , the nomination process will commence on 3rd September 2025 and run until 24th September 2025.
“From 3rd to 5th September, the Commission will receive those aspiring for district and city chairperson positions as well as councillors for districts and cities,” Julius Musinguzi , the spokesperson of EC revealed .
The exercise will take place at district electoral offices in districts or cities where candidates intend to contest.
From 8th to 10th September, the Commission will handle nominations for municipality and division chairpersons and councillors. Between 11th and 24th September, the process will cover municipal division chairpersons and councillors, as well as sub-county and town council chairpersons. These nominations will be conducted at electoral offices in the relevant districts and counties.
Those who secure nomination will appear on ballot papers and take part in campaigns ahead of polling, which is expected between 12th January and 9th February 2026. The exact polling days will be set by the Commission.
On independent candidates, the Commission confirmed that election symbols are already published in the government gazette. “Getting the symbols will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Those who are first to go through selection will be the first to pick the symbol they are to use if they are independent,” Musinguzi explained . Candidates running under political parties will use their party symbols.
The Commission also issued guidelines on attendance during the nomination process. “Only three people are to be allowed at the nominations the aspirant and two supporters,” he said, cautioning against bringing large groups to the venues.
The Electoral Commission has urged all aspiring candidates to adhere to the rules and directions outlined in the nomination programme . On Monday the Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke warned all aspirants against moving with huge crowds and interrupting traffic flow on roads .
