2026 Polls: JEEMA fails to endorse presidential candidate three weeks into campaigns

Opposition Justice Forum (JEEMA) Party leaders have failed to decide which candidate they should rally behind as Uganda gears up to the January General Election .
Instead , the party leaders have told members that they are free to support any candidate, including President Museveni of National Unity Platform (NUP) ,who has been in power for 40 years.

This decision was reached during JEEMA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Kampala on Wednesday, which also saw the unveiling of parliamentary flag bearers across key constituencies.
The debate within the NEC was reportedly heated, with some members proposing support based on ideology, while others suggested excluding both the NRM and Kyagulanyi’s National Politics .

“JEEMA will continue to stand by its values. We are a party guided by discipline and respect, not insults,” JEEMA Party President and sole MP for Bugiri Municipality County , Asuman Basalirwa, said
The party also unveiled 13 parliamentary flag bearers who will contest in constituencies including Bugiri Municipality, Bukomansimbi North, Nansana Municipality, and Busiro East.

JEEMA pledged full support to ensure these candidates win victory for the party .
Founded as one of Uganda’s oldest opposition parties, JEEMA has historically struggled to expand its parliamentary representation, but party leaders emphasized that adherence to principle remains paramount as political competition intensifies. Currently , the party has only one MP in Parliament .
