2026 polls: Kololo Ceremonial Grounds not available for NUP –Ministry of Defense


KAMPALA.The Ministry of Defense , which manages Kololo Ceremonial Grounds has rejected a request by opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) to hold one of its last rallies at the venue.
In a letter dated October 27 ,2025 , NUP secretary general Lewis Rubongoya , had requested to use the public ceremonial grounds for a presidential rally of NUP flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi on January 10,2026.
But replying Rubongoya’s letter ,Sam Kallu on behalf of Ministry of Defense permanent secretary said Kololo Ceremonial Grounds are already booked up to April 2026.
“…we regret to inform you that your request came a bit late . The grounds are already booked up to March /April 2026 on our calendar,” the letter dated December 8,2025 reads in part .
“You are therefore advised to seek an alternative venue,”
This is the second time NUP is requesting to use the grounds at Kololo and denied access .
Kololo Ceremonial Grounds ,also known as Kololo Grounds Parks Kampala,is a significant land mark in Uganda’s history and culture . It serves as the permanent venue for the country’s independence Day celebrations ,marking 63 years since the country attained self-rule from Britain in 1962. The grounds are a testament to Uganda’s rich history and vibrant culture, offering a serene escape for tourists to reflect on the nation’s past while enjoying picturesque views and lush green spaces .Visitors can explore the grounds ,participate in local events ,and take in the historical ambiance . The grounds are easily accessible, with various transportation options available, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the serene retreat that Kololo Ceremonial Grounds has to offer . For the last 40 years ,the grounds are exclusively used by the current government and apart from musicians and crusaders ,no politicians in the opposition are allowed to use the open space .
