KAMPALA .
Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator Mr Mathias Mpuuga has now said he is going to offer himself to stand for President in next year’s General Elections if his newly formed political party ,the Democratic Front (DF) gives him a chance .
Last month , Mr Mpuuga who last year parted ways with National Unity Platform (NUP) where he served as vice President in charge of Buganda Region , unveiled a new political party, the DF, which rebranded from the little-known Green Partisan Party (GPP).
Featuring on KFM’s The Hotseat talk show on Monday evening hosted by veteran broadcaster Patrick Kamara , Mpuuga ,said he has all the qualifications to be President of Uganda and if it is the wish of DF founder members ,he will for the first time give a shot at the presidency.
The DF is slanted to hold its first-ever delegates conference(DC) at Laston Gardens Hotel in Masaka City this Thursday and on Friday the party will officially be launched to start full-scale political activities ahead of next year’s general elections .“I cannot rule out the possibility of standing for President if the delegates see me fit for that coveted office .There could be other members who also want to compete for the same office and the delegates will put us all on a weighing scale and choose the best ,” he said
Change of position :
Mpuuga,49 had previously stated that it will be “suicidal” for any Opposition politician to take part in next year’s elections without making sweeping amendments in the existing electoral laws. From the look of things ,there is no hope of having electoral reforms in the few next months to the polls as nominations for president are slated for September 17 and October 3 ,2025 according to 2026 Electoral Commission Roadmap .
On the upcoming party DC, Mr Mpuuga revealed that only 500 delegates against over 1000 stipulated in DF’s constitution will attend the conference due to logistical challenges .
“ Our national executive committee has endorsed a proposal to cut the number of delegates to 500 whom we can cater for during the two-day conference ,but still, we continue to solicit financial support to make our event successful ,” he said
On May 6, 2025, the Electoral Commission issued a new certificate, officially recognising the DF as a registered political party in Uganda.
According to Mr Mpuuga DF was founded by a core group of nine individuals: Muzafaru Sentongo, Robert Mukiibi, Stephen Kato, Ivan Lutu, Faridah Nakayiwa, Samuel Busiku, Madinah Nakavuma, Jamil Ssali, and Bruno Ssekuburwa. The DF’s symbol is a large tree (Mvule) with a wide canopy.
Its official colours are green, burnt orange, and light blue.
Mr Mpuuga said the DF is not a breakaway from the Democratic Alliance (DA), a political pressure group he launched on December 5,2024, but rather a product of it. He added that DA brings together three main parties—Social Democratic Party (SDP), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and the Democratic Front (DF)—along with others under the DP bloc.
