2026 polls: Museveni set to pick express of interest forms this Saturday


KAMPALA.

Uganda’s strongman Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has chosen this coming Saturday as the day to pick expression of interest forms from his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) headquarters in Kampala, as he seeks to run for the seventh term in next year’s General Elections.
NRM’s electoral commission chairperson , Mr Tanga Odoi confirmed Museveni’s plan during a media briefing in Kampala on Monday, June 23.


Museveni who has been in power for nearly a half a century , first- want to retain the position of the chairperson of the NRM Central Executive Committee and also the party’s presidential flag bearer in the January 2026 polls .
All CEC aspirants will be nominated on July 4, according to Mr Odoi .


“I want to take this opportunity to notify all the party members that the president will himself pick the nomination forms for party chairman and to contest if given a chance for party presidential flag bearer for the 2026 elections,”Mr Odoi said.


Mr Museveni, 81 who in 2017 benefited from the lifting of the constitutional age limit by Parliament, is criticized by opposition politicians of running down the 45million population country by failure to create jobs to majority of the youth constituting 75 percent and also crackdown down on dissenting voices –by killing or jailing those perceived to be a threat to the regime .


On the other hand , Museveni is credited for promoting peace and stability in the East African nation, which previously witnessed several civil wars that left the economy in shambles.
Pop star-turned-politician, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, Uganda’s biggest opposition figure and leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), is preparing to challenge Mr Museveni for the second time in next year’s election. There are also other contenders who have expressed interest to give a shot at the presidency .
