2026 polls: Presidential candidates meet EC to harmonise campaign programme

KAMPALA.The Electoral Commission has met with representatives of all eight presidential candidates to harmonise their campaign programmes and avoid unnecessary while on campaign trail .


The session, chaired by EC Secretary Richard Kamugisha Baabo on Thursday ,attracted agents of the candidates, such as Robert Centenary from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Rovans Lwanyaga representing the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Moses Byaruhanga, a senior State House staff represented the ruling National Resistance Movement flagbearer Yoweri Museveni .


Police officials also attended to advise on security arrangements during campaign period which kick off on September and close on January 12 .
According to sources that attended the meeting at EC offices , the discussions centered on agreeing on who will campaign where and when, a move aimed at preventing overlaps and potential conflicts between candidates and their supporters.


Presidential candidates are: incumbent Museveni (NRM), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (NUP), Nathan Nandala Mafabi (FDC), and Gregory Mugisha Muntu (Alliance for National Transformation).
Others are Robert Kasibante (National Peasants Party), Mubarak Munyagwa (Common Man’s Party), Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative Party) and Frank Kabinga Bulira (Revolutionary People’s Party)


The 2026 race attracted over 220 aspirants, but only eight were cleared to appear on the ballot. This is publication has learnt that Mr Museveni launches his campaigns in Luweero next Tuesday while Kyagulanyi will be in Busoga sub region . Luweero is central to the ruling NRM politics because it is the area that suffered the 5-year- guerilla war that brought President Museveni to power .


EC spokesperson, Mr Julius Muchunguzi said the commission is now focusing on designing and printing the official ballot paper and also ensuring that campaigns are conducted in accordance with the law .
