KAYUNGA . Kayunga District Woman MP , Ida Nantaba who is seeking a reelection is under fire after her security guards attached to Special Forces Command (SFC) soldiers allegedly beat residents protesting over land disputes. This was at a campaign rally organized by incumbent held at Tweyagalire Village in Kitimbwa Sub-county on Thursday .Chaos broke out when some residents accused the former ICT state minister of exploiting ongoing land wrangles in the district to secure votes.“As some of the campaign rally attendees protested her persistent use of land evictions to get votes but without resolving any of the many cases, the SFC guards got infuriated and started beating up those they thought were trying to cause havoc at the rally,” a source said.Eyewitnesses said the soldiers used electric wires to assault the crowd, triggering a stampede as residents fled the scene for safety.Four people, including 27-year-old Tonny Okiria, a barber from Nkokonjeru Village, Bernard Etyawo, and two other women, were seriously injured and rushed to Kitimbwa Health Centre. Okiria sustained deep cuts on his head and chest that required stitching.“We had gone to attend her rally and also ask her questions but we were surprised when her soldiers instead beat us,” Okiria said.“I am requesting for the president’s intervention because our MP is not using the soldiers rightly. Why beat a person who wants clarification from you?” Etyawo questioned. The victims filed reports at Kayunga Central Police Station. While Nantaba did not respond to repeated requests for comment, a campaign agent, speaking on condition of anonymity, blamed some residents for throwing stones at the SFC soldiers, which allegedly provoked the attacks.“We have information that some people were paid by a politician in the district to come and destabilise our campaign rally,” the agent said, adding that anyone attempting to disrupt their events “shall be dealt with.”Police confirmed receiving reports of the incident but provided limited details.Hellen Butoto, Ssezibwa Region Police spokesperson, said: “During the campaign rally, a group of youth allegedly threw stones at her bodyguards before they fled the scene. In response, two of Nantaba’s guards, known to the victims by appearance, reportedly assaulted a victim identified as Tonny Okiria using sticks before taking him into custody.”She added that another man, Musa Odele, who brought water to Okiria, was also assaulted under suspicion of involvement. Both victims have since been released on police bond, and investigations are ongoing. The incident follows an earlier assault during Nantaba’s campaign in Kayonza Sub-county, where former Kitimbwa Sub-county Speaker, Francis Ntambi, was reportedly beaten.Mariam Seguya, Kayunga District Resident Commissioner, urged politicians and supporters to avoid violence, warning that those involved will face prosecution.“We want to have peaceful campaigns, and anyone who promotes violence will be stopped,” she said.Nantaba is seeking a fourth term in office, facing stiff competition from Jacklyn Birungi (NRM), daughter of her political rival Moses Karangwa, as well as Harriet Nakwedde (NUP), Agatha Nalubwama, and Margaret Nabirye. The voting will be part of Uganda’s January 15, 2026 General Election.
