KAMPALA:
In a bid to protect Uganda’s vital Entebbe Expressway, the Ministry of Works and Transport is installing a new, durable, and vandal-resistant fence along its 20-kilometer stretch. This move comes as a direct response to persistent vandalism that has plagued the toll road since its completion.
“The expressway was designed for authorized traffic only, but vandals have repeatedly breached the existing fence,” explained Allan Ssempebwa, a Ministry of Works and Transport communication specialist. “We’re now sourcing materials from China that are virtually tamper-proof.”
The new fencing, expected to be installed later this year, will utilize materials like galvanized steel, stainless steel, and reinforced composites, known for their strength and resilience. Options include welded wire mesh, 358 security mesh, or solid metal panels.
The Ministry aims to safeguard the $476 million (Shs1.8 trillion) expressway, a critical link between Entebbe International Airport and Kampala, which has faced ongoing challenges from theft and damage. The new fencing is designed to withstand both environmental wear and deliberate tampering.
“Our goal is to ensure the infrastructure remains intact and secure for daily users,” Ssempebwa emphasized. The upgrades will also reinforce the expressway’s restricted access, preventing pedestrians and motorcyclists from entering the high-speed roadway.
While the exact cost of the project is yet to be disclosed, the Ministry is committed to investing in a long-term solution to protect this key national asset. The installation of the vandal-proof fencing is seen as a crucial step in maintaining the
