Tragedy as eight perish in Mbarara road crash
KIRUHURA .Eight people are reported dead and another seriously hurt after a Toyota Hiace car they were travelling in collided with a trailer at Kibega I village along Mbarara-Lyantonde highway.
Police said the injured was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.
The deceased and the injured who are yet to be identified were all occupants of the Toyota Hiace, according to police.
“It’s alleged that the Toyota Hiace was from Mbarara headed to Lyantonde while the trailer was from Lyantonde headed to Mbarara direction. The Toyota Hiace driver overtook from a corner and ended up colliding with the trailer that was coming from the opposite direction in its lane,” said Rwizi police regional spokesperson, SP Samson Kasasira.
He attributed the cause of the 6:30pm Friday crash to reckless driving.
“Efforts to identify the deceased are also still ongoing,” SP Kasasira added in a statement.
