
The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has finally granted bail to National Unity Platform (NUP) Electoral Management Committee member John Mary Ssebuwufu after spending 40 days in jail .
Ssebuwufu,50 who also serves as Nakawa Division Lord Councillor, was released on a cash bail of Shs 500,000. As part of the bail conditions, he was ordered to deposit his passport with the court.
He was arrested on January 14, 2026, a day before the general elections, and reportedly held incommunicado for over three weeks before being presented in court on February 6.
He faces charges of inciting violence, with the prosecution alleging that he mobilized individuals to attack supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) during a period of heightened political tension.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate stated that the court was satisfied with the sureties presented.
“The court finds that the presented sureties are substantial and reliable within the meaning of the law,” she ruled.
Ssebuwufu was also directed to upload his National Identification Card details onto the Electronic Case Management Information System. However, he told the court that he lost his ID during the time of his arrest.
