Assailants shoot dead Ex New Vision journalist Joe Nam

KAMPALA.A veteran journalist, Joe Nam, has been shot dead by an unidentified gunman at his home in a Kampala City suburb.

Nam, 55, a former journalist for the New Vision newspaper, was shot dead on Sunday at around 1am at Kawanda Central, Nabweru Division in Wakiso District.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire said the suspect was wearing a mask and fled the scene after the shooting.

“Preliminary information indicates that an unidentified armed assailant shot and killed him. The suspect, who was masked, fled the scene immediately after the incident,” Mr Owoyesigyire said on Sunday.

Nam was shot while he had got out of his home for prayers. His wife responded to the gunshots and found her husband dead. They called the police, but the officers arrived when the victim had already died.

Mr Owoyesigyire said the police teams are on the ground to document the crime scene and get any evidence that would help them track down the killer.

“The body has been taken to the mortuary at Mulago for a post mortem as part of the investigations. The other teams are on ground to establish circumstances surrounding the incident and what could be the motive for the shooting,” he said.

The investigators want to establish the type of firearm that was used to kill him.Joe Nam was a renowned journalist, who covered various beats including business, environment and politics.

Since his retirement from active journalism, he has been carrying out consultancy work.He also authored a book titled ‘The Day Museveni goes: Reflections-Questions-Fears-Hope.’
