Tumwebaze Highlights Importance of Livestock Feed Storage for Sustainable Milk Production

By Joseph Mary Buwule

The Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries and Member of Parliament for Kibale East, Frank Tumwebaze has emphasized the importance of proper livestock feed planning and storage as a key pillar for sustainable milk production in Uganda.

In a message shared on his official X platform on Sunday, Tumwebaze revealed that he had spent part of the afternoon inspecting the readiness of his maize garden ahead of the ensiling process, a modern method of preserving livestock feed.

The minister expressed gratitude for the favorable weather conditions experienced this season, noting that the rains had greatly supported crop growth and raised optimism for a good harvest.

“We thank God for the sufficient rains we have received and are still receiving this season. Excited and optimistic about the harvest,” Tumwebaze posted.

He noted that bulking and storing enough livestock feed is essential for dairy farmers who want to maintain consistent milk production throughout the year, especially during dry seasons when pasture becomes scarce.

Tumwebaze further encouraged farmers to prioritize feed planning before venturing into dairy farming, stressing that quality animal nutrition directly determines milk productivity.

“If you think milk and cows, think first and plan for feeds,” he stated.

Ensiling involves harvesting green maize or grass and storing it in airtight conditions to ferment naturally, preserving nutrients for future livestock feeding. Agricultural experts say the practice helps farmers reduce feed shortages, improve milk yields, and maintain healthy animals during periods of drought.

Uganda’s dairy sector remains one of the country’s fastest-growing agricultural industries, contributing significantly to household incomes, food security, and export earnings. Government and agricultural stakeholders continue to encourage farmers to adopt modern farming technologies and climate-smart agricultural practices to boost productivity and resilience.
