Graduates of Uganda Christian University (UCU) have been challenged to uphold integrity, faith and excellence as they embark on the next chapter of their lives, with university leaders urging them to use their education to serve society and transform their communities.
The call was made during the first session of UCU’s 27th Graduation Ceremony held on Friday at the university’s main campus in Mukono.
Chairperson of the University Council, Rt. Rev. Prof. Alfred Olwa, said graduation was more than the award of degrees and diplomas, describing it as a celebration of resilience, sacrifice and God’s faithfulness throughout the graduates’ academic journey.
“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities, responsibilities and challenges,” Prof. Olwa said. “The modern world demands not only intellectual competence but also ethical leadership, compassion and courage.”
He reminded the graduates that, as products of a Christian institution, they have a responsibility to uphold integrity and become agents of positive change in society.
“We need professionals who refuse corruption, entrepreneurs who create opportunities, educators who inspire hope, and leaders who seek justice and peace,” he said.
Drawing from Matthew 5:16, Prof. Olwa encouraged the graduates to let their light shine through good works and to serve as ambassadors of Christ in business, government, education, healthcare, technology and other sectors.
He also applauded parents, guardians, sponsors, lecturers and university staff for supporting the graduates throughout their academic journey, reaffirming the University Council’s commitment to strengthening quality education, research and innovation while preserving UCU’s Christian identity.
Prof. Olwa further urged the graduates to embrace lifelong learning and become solution-oriented leaders capable of responding to global challenges such as economic uncertainty and rapid technological change.
“Be solution providers rather than critics, bridge builders rather than dividers, and peacemakers rather than instigators,” he advised.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi congratulated the graduates and reminded them that genuine success is measured not only by academic achievement but also by service, integrity and faith.
“We celebrate 1,274 graduates today, comprising 698 women (55 percent) and 576 men (45 percent). Among them are 102 First Class graduates,” he said.
“As you join the global community, remember that true success is measured by your service to others, your integrity in leadership, and your faithfulness in every endeavour you pursue.”
The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr. Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, urged the graduates to uphold the values instilled in them during their time at UCU, noting that their conduct would reflect on the university.
“The choices you make, the conduct you exhibit, and the character you carry will either adorn or tarnish the name of this great institution,” he said.
Guest of Honour and former UCU Chancellor, Rt. Rev. Dr. Henry Luke Orombi, encouraged the graduates to remain steadfast in their faith and committed to serving humanity.
Drawing from biblical teachings, Orombi urged them to stand firm in their convictions and use their knowledge to build stronger communities.
“Wherever you go, be people who build and not destroy,” he said.
The ceremony also celebrated outstanding academic achievement. Of the 1,274 graduates, 698 were women (55 percent) while 576 were men (45 percent), reflecting the continued strong performance of female students in higher education.
The university recorded its highest-ever number of First Class honours graduates, with 102 students earning the distinction. Women accounted for 60 of the First Class graduates, while men accounted for 42.
Don Acheng emerged as the overall best-performing student, graduating with a Bachelor of Procurement and Logistics Management and an outstanding Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.91.
Marvin Tumusiime was the best-performing male graduate, earning a GPA of 4.85 in Bachelor of Business Administration, while Emmanuel Nsubuga was recognised as the top science student after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Analytics with a GPA of 4.79.
