KAMPALA. Retired Anglican Bishop Christopher Ssenyonjo, has died aged 94.
Bishop Ssenjonjo supported LGBTQ people and this led to his expulsion from the Church of Uganda and made him one of the country’s most controversial clerics in Uganda.
Family members and friends said Ssenyonjo died on July 19. Born on Dec. 8, 1931, he served as Bishop of West Buganda Diocese from 1974 until his retirement in 1998.
After retiring, Ssenyonjo openly ministered to LGBTQ Ugandans, putting him at odds with the Church of Uganda.
In 2006, the Church, under then Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi, severed ties with him, stripping him of the privileges of an Anglican bishop after accusing him of rejecting church doctrine through his support for homosexuality.
While critics viewed him as having abandoned biblical teaching, supporters praised him for advocating compassion and inclusion.
He went on to found Integrity Uganda, counsel LGBTQ people and become an internationally recognised voice on faith and human rights. Geographic Reference
