The Buganda Kingdom, through Mutesa I Royal University, has commissioned the construction of a Shs23 billion multi-purpose hall aimed at strengthening education and cultural development within the kingdom.
The groundbreaking ceremony was presided over by Nalinya Lubuga Dr. Agnes Nabaloga at the university premises in Mengo-Kakeeka, Kampala.
The project forms part of activities marking the 33rd coronation anniversary of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, which will be commemorated at Watoto Ministry headquarters in Namanve, Bweyogerere near Kampala.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bulemeezi Chief Kkangawo Dr. Ronald Mulondo emphasized the importance of involving young people in the kingdom’s social, economic, and development programs.
“The future of the kingdom depends on the active participation of the youth in all development activities,” Dr. Mulondo said.
The Minister for Education Affairs and head of the Office of the Nnaabagereka, Cotrida Nakate, outlined details of the project, describing it as a six-storey modern facility designed to support learning and community activities.
According to Nakate, the building will include a main hall with a seating capacity of 10,000 people, nine classrooms each accommodating about 100 learners, a basement, and other essential facilities.
In her remarks, Nalinya Lubuga Dr. Agnes Nabaloga praised the restoration of the Buganda Kingdom and its continued commitment to preserving cultural values while promoting education and socio-economic transformation.
She urged the contractors to ensure high-quality work and timely completion of the project.
Nalinya Lubuga also called upon the university administration to place greater emphasis on promoting Luganda as a language and cultural heritage among students and the wider community.
“We must continue promoting our culture and traditions by giving Luganda the attention it deserves,” she said.
The multi-purpose hall is expected to become a major center for academic, cultural, and community activities within Buganda Kingdom and beyond.
