Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has expressed gratitude to President Museveni following his directive to release her from house arrest and drop impending corruption charges against her.
In a Wednesday post on her X (formerly Twitter) platform on August 26, 2026, the Bukedea Woman Member of Parliament reacted to her sudden release, thanking the Almighty God for life and freedom while extending appreciation to the country’s leadership.
“I take this opportunity to thank the Almighty God for the gift of life and freedom,” Ms Among posted. “My profound and heartfelt appreciation goes to His Excellency, President Yoweri Museveni, for his unmatched parental grace and decision to grant me mercy.”
Ms Among also commended the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his handling of the situation.
“I also extend my gratitude to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his professionalism throughout this period. As the Woman MP for Bukedea, I look forward to continuing my work for my constituents and standing firm with our revolutionary leadership,” she stated.
Her message came barely a day after Gen Muhoozi publicly announced on August 25, 2026, that his father had instructed the military to lift the restrictions on the former Speaker’s movement.
“Mzee (President Museveni) has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes but Mzee has decided to forgive her,” Gen Muhoozi posted on X.
Mr Museveni’s pardon brings a dramatic conclusion to over 100 days of restricted movement for the former head of the legislature. Ms Among had been confined to her residence in Nakasero, Kampala, since mid-May 2026, when joint security forces raided her properties in connection with wide-ranging graft probes. The investigations, ordered by the President, targeted allegations of corruption, abuse of office, and illicit enrichment.
While the decision effectively closes potential legal proceedings against Ms Among, several parliamentary staff and associates who were picked up during the broader investigation remain on trial over alleged financial losses and money laundering. Sources said following the directive, Special Forces Command (SFC) personnel deployed at her residence withdrew, restoring her freedom to resume her legislative duties as Bukedea Woman MP.
