FORT PORTAL . The King of Tooro, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has appointed Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire as the kingdom’s interim Prime Minister .

Rwomiire will oversee the kingdom affairs during a six-month transition period.

The appointment was announced by Paul Nyakana Businge, the Principal Secretary to the King, in a statement issued on behalf of the monarch.

Rwomiire, who served as Prime Minister during the reign of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, will continue to oversee the kingdom’s administration during the transition.

The Omukama also retained Prince Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki as the Omusuga of Tooro, with Prince Kato Benard Rwakatale Abbooki as his deputy .

Kamurasi is the Chief Prince and head of the Babiito Royal Clan, while Abbooki has previously served as his assistant in the Omusuga’s office.

The King also appointed an 11-member interim advisory committee to support the administration during the transition.

The committee comprises Erisa Kakyomya, Peace Mutuuzo, Chris Kaijuka, Isaiah Mayombo, Bernard Tungwako, Flavia Kabahenda, Aston Kajara, Binta Kasoojo, Abdullah Mangalija, William Byaruhanga and Monica Rubombora.

The appointments are intended to provide an interim leadership structure as the kingdom reorganises its administration under the new reign.

The six-month transition follows the installation of Nyabongo as the new Omukama of Tooro after the death of Oyo on August 27, 2026.

Nyabongo’s accession followed weeks of dispute within the kingdom over the succession process, with members of the late king’s family and other stakeholders expressing differing positions over the identity of his successor.

The new administration is therefore expected to balance the continuity of kingdom institutions with the establishment of structures for the new reign.

The retention of Rwomiire, who had been at the centre of the kingdom’s administration during the succession period, provides continuity as the new monarch begins his reign.
