Residents in Serere County ,Serere District have a reason to smile after Mr Steven Ariong , a contender for Serere County repaired a total of 775 broken boreholes that the district had thought would never operate again.
Ariong ,a former journalist with Nation Media Group based in Karamoja sub region started repairing boreholes early last year solving the problem of water scarcity that had dogged residents in Serere County for months .
Ariong who’s eying the ruling National Resistance Movement ticket , repairs the boreholes and also takes on the responsibility to maintain them without residents paying any penny .
‘’ I found it disturbing when I moved around and people were complaining that they cannot access clean water . I took on the responsibility and I am seeing a visible impact in access to clean and safe water ,” he said in an interview on Wednesday
Apart from repairing faulty boreholes, Ariong has installed 18 public primary schools with solar systems to enable pupils revise their books at night .
He has also supplemented government plans of constructing teachers’ houses in every public primary school in the constituency.
“ So far, I have roofed three teachers houses -two houses at Ojetenyang primary school and one at Owiny Agule in Kateta Sub County,” he explains
Mr Ariong has also completed some projects that were left by late Bishop Patrick Okabe, such as a placenta pit at Kamusala Health Centre II . “ I am also erecting waiting shades at government health centres to save our people from sunshine or rain while waiting for treatment ,”he says .
The first time parliamentary contender is further constructing public toilets across the trading centres in the county to address sanitation challenges.
