Vipers SC on the Brink of Uganda Premier League Glory, as NEC FC Slip in the Title Race

Kampala

Vipers SC are one win away from securing their seventh StarTimes Uganda Premier League title following a commanding 6-0 demolition of relegated Mbale Heroes FC at St. Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday. The Venoms’ emphatic victory, paired with NEC FC’s 1-1 draw against BUL FC, leaves Vipers needing just three points from their final three matches to clinch the championship.

Vipers’ Dominant Display

Led by captain Milton Karisa, Vipers showcased their title credentials with a relentless performance. Karisa opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and added a second after the break, setting the tone for the rout. Yunus Sentamu, Allan Okello, and substitutes Mohammad Selam Ekbad and Kenneth Kimera completed the scoring, overwhelming a hapless Mbale Heroes side. The result lifted Vipers to 65 points, seven clear of second-placed NEC FC.

The Venoms’ attacking flair and defensive solidity left Mbale Heroes, already condemned to relegation with just 10 points, with no answers. Coach John Ayala Luyinda praised his team’s focus, stating, “We’re hungry for the title, and this performance shows our intent.”

NEC’s Title Hopes Fade

NEC FC’s slim chances of catching Vipers were dealt a fatal blow after a 1-1 draw with BUL FC at MTN-Omondi Stadium, Lugogo. Karim Ndugwa gave BUL the lead before halftime, but Cromwell Rwothomio’s 84th-minute equalizer salvaged a point for Hussein Mbalangu’s side. Despite the late heroics, NEC’s failure to secure maximum points left them trailing Vipers by an insurmountable gap with only three games remaining.

Title-Deciding Weekend Ahead

Vipers can seal the 2024/25 title as early as this weekend with a victory over BUL FC on May 10. BUL, who held NEC to a draw, will pose a challenge, but Vipers’ momentum—unbeaten in eight matches—and superior goal difference make them favorites. For NEC, the focus shifts to securing second place, while Mbale Heroes face UPDF in a bid to restore pride despite their relegation.

Vipers’ Road to Redemption

After a challenging start to the season, Vipers have hit top form under Luyinda. Karisa’s leadership, Okello’s resurgence, and contributions from squad players like Ekbad and Kimera have propelled the Venoms to the cusp of glory. The club, champions in 2022/23, is poised to add another trophy to their storied history.

Vipers’ commanding win and NEC’s stumble highlight the intensity of the Uganda Premier League title race. With the championship within reach, Vipers are set to cement their dominance, while NEC’s resilience keeps the competition alive for next season.
