Hundreds left homeless as rainstorm sweeps through three villages in Lwengo District

Hundreds of residents in three villages in Lwengo District are homeless that rainstorm ravaged the area , destroying homes and washing away crops.
The worst-hit villages in the Sunday rainstorm are Lwentale , Lwemiyaga and Kiganda in Malongo Sub County .


According to Moses Kitamanyirwe, chairperson of Lwemiyaga village, the disaster has left the area residents vulnerable to famine after many banana plantations, and other crops were destroyed .
“We are left with nothing. Houses collapsed, gardens were destroyed, and families are now stranded in the cold,” Kitamanyirwe said.


Among those hit hardest are widows and elderly people without caretakers, now surviving on handouts from well-wishers .
Children, too, are in despair after the storm struck while their grandmother was away in Kampala receiving hospital treatment.


“We have survived the devastating rain storm , but what is going to kill us now is hunger. We have nowhere to sleep. Everything is in ruins ,” Nicholas Abimanya, another resident complained
Lwemiyaga village councillor Enock Katoroogo described the Sunday rain storm is the worst the area has ever suffered .


“ We are calling on government to swiftly come to our rescue,” he said
Lwengo District Chairperson ,Mr Ibrahim Kitatta visited the devastated villages to assess the situation.
“I feel the pain of our people, but we shall not leave them alone. As district leadership, we are going to forward our findings to the relevant ministries for support,” he said
