
KAMPALA.The National Environment Authority (Nema) has impounded several equipment from bars , entertainment places and places of worship over alleged noise pollution .
The weekend operation carried out by Nema’s Department of Enforcement and Field Operations came after the affected places defied continuous warns from the environmental watchdog.
The exercise was conducted in accordance with the National Environment (Noise Standards and Control ) Regulations 2003 ,which provide for offenders .The enforcement was carried out over the weekend ,a period when many people usually flock to entertainment spots , Ms Naome Karehako , the spokesperson of Nema said in a statement on Monday
She said the enforcement operations covered several areas including Mukono , Seeta ,Bweyogere , Kireka , Buloba , Makindye ,Mengo and Kampala City .
This intervention follows increasing public outcry over excessive noise pollution and perceptions of inadequate enforcement. Nema reiterates its commitment to protecting the right of all Ugandans to a clean and healthy environment as enshrined in Article 39 of the Constitution, she said
Noise pollution is linked to numerous health risks including stress , hearing loss , and reduced productivity . It also undermines community wellbeing, affecting schools , hospitals ,places of worship ,and households .
Nema urged all proprietors of bars , entertainment venues places of worship ,and other facilities that use amplified sound to comply with the established noise standards .
