2026 polls: Bagala, Sseggona , Ssewanyana dropped as NUP picks parliamentary flag bearers


The National Unity Platform has disappointed some of its finest legislators as the party positons itself to win more parliamentary seats in next year’s general elections .
Currently , NUP has only 57 legislators ,the party targets at least 100 legislators in only Buganda region where it is more dominant.


Among the casualties include maverick Busiro East MP Medard Ssegoona , Mityana District Woman MPJoyce Bagala ,Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyama and Christine Ndiwalana of Bukomansimbi North Constituency .Ssegoona ,one of the NUP lawyers has been in parliament for fifteen years and was seeking a fourth term in Parliament .

Also affected is Kalungu East MP Patrick Katabaazi replaced by Yusuf Kiruluuta . Ssegoona’s card has been handed to singer Mathias Walukagga while Proscovia Mukisa commonly known as Nabbosa will carry the NUP flag for Mityana District Woman MP seat . Kampala Capital City Authority speaker Zarah Luyirika snatched the ticket from Ssewanyana .


The reshuffle also saw Rubaga South MP Aloysius Mukasa dropped in favour of Nassolo Eugenia. Party officials said the changes followed a fresh vetting exercise designed to boost grassroots support and front candidates they believe can deliver stronger performances in 2026.


While handing a list of flag bearers on Monday to party president Robert Kyagulanyi , Harriet Chemutai , the NUP Electoral Man Management Committee chairperson said their selection was thorough and urged those who lost the cards to rally behind the official party flag bearers .


The decision has stirred mixed reactions within NUP. Supporters of the shake-up hail it as a sign of rejuvenation, arguing that the party needs to energize its line-up with new voices. An analysis of the list of flagbearers released , majority of the incumbents have been retained and several new comers have been brought on board .
