KYOTERA. Police are investigating the mysterious death of one of their senior officer who collapsed and died on Sunday evening .
Southern (Masaka sub region ) Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (CP) Godfrey Maate, reportedly collapsed while on duty in Sango Bay, Kyotera District and died moments later .
Police preliminary investigations indicate that CP Maate collapsed on Sunday evening and was rushed to a nearby clinic for emergency treatment, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed.
“We sadly announce the death of Commissioner of Police Maate Godfrey, Commander of Sango Bay Police operations. He passed away yesterday in Kyotera District,” a statement by Police on its official X account read on Monday morning.
Maate’s death marks yet another blow to the Uganda Police Force, coming just two weeks after the passing of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Erasmus Kataratambi, who died on October 2, 2025.On September 3,2025 Superintendent of Police (SP) Musa Walugembe, another senior officer was found dead in his residence in Najjanankumbi, Kampala
Who was Maate?
A seasoned and widely respected officer, CP Maate was appointed by Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba in July 2025 as Zonal Commander for Masaka sub region to spearhead security coordination and policing ahead of the 2025/26 General Election period.
Maate joined the Uganda Police Force in the late 1990s as a police constable and steadily rose through the ranks to Commissioner of Police. He was among the pioneer officers trained at Jinja Military School in 1998, graduating in the same cohort as Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and AIGP John Ndungutse.
Throughout his over 25-year career, he served in several critical operational and command roles, including Kampala Central Police Station, Kalangala, and Kasese, where he earned a reputation for discipline, professionalism, and effective field leadership.
He was also a key figure in the national security task force overseeing school examination safety, ensuring integrity and order during national exams — a role that showcased his attention to duty and public service.
By Monday afternoon Police authorities were expected to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances of his death and the burial arrangements.
