Afrigo Band Shines at Rain-Soaked Golden Jubilee Concert Backed by Stanbic

LUGOGO, KAMPALA — Neither the persistent evening rain nor the chilly breeze could deter thousands of enthusiastic fans from turning up in droves to honor one of Uganda’s most iconic music groups. Afrigo Band, the country’s longest-running ensemble, marked 50 years of musical excellence with a spectacular, sold-out show at Lugogo Cricket Oval, generously supported by Stanbic Bank Uganda.

Braving a heavy downpour, loyal fans from across generations danced, sang, and celebrated a remarkable legacy of sound and culture. The event showcased more than just nostalgia—it was a vibrant display of unity, resilience, and national pride.

The concert featured an electric guest appearance by Congolese soukous legend Kofi Olomide, whose energetic Ndombolo performances, including the popular Papa Mobimba and Effrakata, drove the crowd into ecstatic dances late into the night.

Stanbic Bank’s Brand and Marketing Manager, Lois Kwikiriza, praised both the organizers and fans for their unwavering spirit. “Rain only made the moment more powerful—it proved our love for Ugandan music runs deep,” she said. “Supporting Afrigo aligns with our belief that ‘Uganda is our home, and we drive her growth.’”

Douglas Lwanga, the official host, kept energy levels high throughout the night. Opening performances came from Abeka Band, who paid homage to Uganda’s musical roots by starting with the Buganda Kingdom anthem and performing hits by local legends like Mesach SemakulaChance Nalubega, and Sweet Kid.

But the spotlight belonged to Afrigo Band. Clad in stunning black-and-gold outfits, founding member Moses Matovu led the group in timeless hits like BatuuseEmaaliObangainaNfunda N’omubi, and Olumbe Lw’Obwavu, sparking massive singalongs and emotional moments among the audience.

Fans enjoyed a full Ugandan experience with discounted drinks courtesy of Flexipay and Uganda Breweries, creating a festive atmosphere despite the soggy grounds.

As the clock neared midnight, the event reached a crescendo with a dazzling fireworks show and the unveiling of the Afrigo at 50 Commemorative Book, launched in a ceremony attended by Prince David Wassajja, who represented the Kabaka of Buganda, and Hon. Nyombi Thembo, Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission.

Delivering the Kabaka’s message, Prince Wassajja said, “His Majesty is immensely proud of Afrigo’s contributions to the cultural and musical heritage of Buganda and Uganda at large.”

Talent Africa Group CEO Ali Allybai, one of the key organizers, summed it up best: “This wasn’t just a concert—it was a celebration of culture, endurance, and excellence. We’re grateful to Ugandans for turning up and promise even more unforgettable experiences ahead.”

Despite the weather, the night will be remembered as a resounding success—a celebration worthy of a half-century of music from Uganda’s most beloved band.
