Alcohol abuse suspected in 50-year-old’s death


Lwengo.

Residents of Sseke A Village in Kinoni Town Council, Lwengo District, were engulfed in fear after landing on the body of a fellow resident who had died in his house several days earlier.
The deceased was identified as Lugemwa Banku, aged 50.


Banku’s body was discovered on Sunday after residents passing near his home felt a foul smell and also saw a swarm of flies at the door, which signaled that something was wrong inside.


They immediately called Dr Twaha Kagabo, the area Member of Parliament for Bukoto South who was in the area and he examined the body and discovered the deceased had consumed too much alcohol without eating, causing his tongue to swell and leading to his death.


The deceased’s body was found with peeling skin, indicating that he haddead some days ago .
The village chairperson, Hajji Bruno Mustapha, condemned the practice of some people who stay alone, noting that the deceased had separated from his family and decided to live alone.


Ramathan Walugembe, a brother of the deceased, stated that his brother had always consumed alcohol without eating food.
Mr Quraish Luyinda, a relative, expressed deep gratitude to the residents who responded promptly .


The deceased’s drinking companions also stated that they hadn’t seen him for four days, which caused them great concern.


Dr Kagabo warned residents against excessive alcohol consumption and urged them to use their money more wisely.


The acting police spokesperson, Faisal Magumba, confirmed the incident and condemned excessive alcohol consumption, stating that it is dangerous .

However, he confirmed that the body was handed over to the family members for burial.
