Libya
The Libyan Football Federation has officially appointed Senegalese football legend Aliou Cissé as the new head coach of the men’s national team. The announcement was made on Tuesday, March 11, via the federation’s official social media platforms, welcoming Cissé with the statement, “We welcome the best coach in Africa.”
Cissé, who famously led Senegal to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 2022, has signed a two-year contract that will see him in charge until 2027. He replaces Nasser Al-Hadhiri, who had been appointed in September 2024.
Contract and Salary Details
According to Africa Soccer, Cissé will earn a monthly salary of €76,000 (approximately UGX 302 million), making him the second highest-paid coach in Africa. He is only behind Algeria’s Vladimir Petković, who earns €135,000 (approximately UGX 537 million) per month.
Cissé, 48, will be officially presented to the media on March 13 in Tripoli, where he is expected to outline his vision for the team.
Challenges Ahead for Cissé
Libya failed to qualify for the upcoming AFCON, set to take place in Morocco later this year. However, they are currently second in their World Cup qualifying group and will face Angola later this month as they continue their campaign for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With a proven track record of success in African football, Cissé’s appointment signals Libya’s ambitions to strengthen their national team and compete on the continental and global stage.
