Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has officially declared her bid for re-election as Speaker in the 12th Parliament while revealing plans to retire from active politics in 2031.
Among made the announcement during the 2nd sitting of the Women’s Parliament, where over 400 women leaders gathered to discuss critical issues affecting women in Uganda. She emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of the girl child and called for an end to harmful cultural practices such as early marriages and female genital mutilation (FGM).
“We must protect the rights of the girl child. It’s our responsibility to ensure they are not left behind,” Among asserted. She also took the opportunity to commend President Yoweri Museveni for implementing economic empowerment programs that have significantly improved the livelihoods of women across Uganda. These initiatives, she noted, have played a key role in advancing women’s economic and social progress.
Among further stated that upon her retirement in 2031, she envisions her Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, assuming the role of Speaker, marking the end of her active political journey.
During the event, Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesigye also praised President Museveni for his efforts in increasing women’s representation in Parliament and appointing them to key government positions. Currently, Uganda’s Parliament boasts 188 female legislators, including directly elected MPs, district women MPs, and representatives from special interest groups.
As Uganda gears up to celebrate International Women’s Day, the Women’s Parliament continues to serve as a vital platform for addressing pressing issues affecting women across the country. Leaders remain committed to advocating for gender equality, economic empowerment, and the protection of women’s rights nationwide.
