The State House Comptroller, Jane Barekye, has officially launched a Patriotism Development Course at Kitebi Secondary School, calling on students to prioritize education, discipline, and national values.

The launch event, held on Monday, brought together officials from the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC), school leadership, and students. Ms. Barekye was received by Captain Richard Owaruhanga, Assistant Commissioner in charge of training at NSPC, Course Coordinator Mr. Job Titus Seku, and the school’s head teacher, Mr. Muhammed Kamulegeya.

In her address, Barekye commended stakeholders for supporting the program and highlighted its origins under Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, noting its role in shaping responsible and patriotic citizens. She also recognized the leadership of NSPC Commissioner Hellen Seku in advancing the initiative.

She encouraged students to take their studies seriously, emphasizing that academic focus is key to building a strong future for both individuals and the country. According to Barekye, discipline and determination are essential traits of a true patriot.

The Comptroller also cautioned learners against engaging in negative behaviors and advised them to associate with peers who promote good character, hard work, and positive values. She further urged students to avoid divisive politics and instead embrace unity and respect for others.

Highlighting opportunities for youth, Barekye spoke about government programs such as Universal Primary and Secondary Education (UPE and USE), which she said have enabled many Ugandans to access schooling. She also introduced students to the Presidential Skilling Hubs initiative, which provides free vocational training and start-up support for those who may not advance academically.

She noted that the program equips learners with practical skills in fields such as carpentry, tailoring, and engineering, adding that the certification obtained is recognized for further education at tertiary institutions.

Barekye also encouraged girls to pursue their ambitions, citing national leaders such as Robinah Nabbanja and Anita Among as examples of women who have risen to prominent leadership positions.

Kitebi SS Head Teacher, Muhammed Kamulegeya, welcomed the expansion of the patriotism program to the school, revealing that more than 3,000 students are expected to benefit from the training.

Captain Owaruhanga expressed appreciation to President Museveni for championing the initiative and thanked Ms. Barekye for officiating at the launch. He also briefed her on the course content, which is aimed at instilling national values, discipline, and civic responsibility among students.

The Patriotism Development Course is part of ongoing efforts to nurture a generation of informed, disciplined, and committed citizens.
