In a landmark move for Kenyan football, former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has been unveiled as the new head coach of the Harambee Stars, Kenya’s national football team. The South African legend, who enjoyed a stellar playing career and has since transitioned into coaching, replaces Turkish tactician Engin Firat. McCarthy has signed a two-year contract with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), with his tenure set to run until the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
McCarthy’s appointment marks a significant step for Kenyan football as the country seeks to revive its fortunes on the continental and global stage. The 45-year-old brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and a coach. During his playing days, he earned 80 caps for South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and starred for European clubs such as FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers. As a coach, he most recently worked under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, where he honed his skills at one of the world’s most prestigious clubs.

The announcement was made at a press conference held at Nairobi’s Serena Hotel, where McCarthy expressed his excitement and commitment to the new role. “I am honored to take on this role and excited about the journey with the Kenyan national team. I have studied the talent in this country, and I believe there is immense potential to compete at the highest level,” said the 1998 Afcon top scorer.
The new technical team will see McCarthy assisted by Vasili Manousakis as the first assistant coach, former South African goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs as the goalkeeper coach, and Pilela Maposa as the performance analyst. This diverse and experienced backroom staff is expected to bring fresh ideas and a modern approach to the Harambee Stars.
FKF President Mohammed Hussein expressed confidence in McCarthy’s ability to lead the team to new heights. “After a rigorous selection process, we are confident that Benni McCarthy is the right person to lead our national team forward. His football experience, vision, and commitment to developing Kenyan football align perfectly with our ambitions,” Hussein stated.
McCarthy’s immediate focus will be on the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where Kenya is set to face Gabon and Gambia. These matches will provide an early test of his tactical acumen and ability to galvanize the team. Kenyan fans will be hoping that McCarthy’s leadership can inspire the Harambee Stars to secure a historic World Cup qualification.
The appointment of a high-profile coach like McCarthy signals a new era for Kenyan football. With his proven track record, passion for the game, and a clear vision for the future, the Harambee Stars may well be on the cusp of a transformative period. As the nation rallies behind its new coach, the dream of seeing Kenya shine on the global stage feels closer than ever.
