Bobi Wine promises better education, healthcare as wife joins vote hunting in Busoga

KALIRO. National Unity Platform flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has promised sweeping reforms in education, healthcare, and welfare if elected President in the January General Election .

Addressing a mammoth rally in Kaliro District on Wednesday, the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader said his government would prioritize free education, higher pay for security personnel, improved hospitals, and gender equality.
“We have won in Busoga soundly before and I have no doubt that we shall do it again,” Bobi Wine declared.

“But I’m here so that you understand what exactly you’re supporting and voting for – free education, increment in security officers’ pay, good hospitals, and gender equality.”

His wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, made an emotional appeal to the crowd, urging voters to trust her husband with the responsibility of transforming lives in the east.

“I came to ask you to support Bobi Wine because he’s committed to transforming your lives,” she said.
“I want you to vote for Kyagulanyi to boost the quality of healthcare and education in eastern Uganda. Bobi Wine is committed to improving the quality of education so your children can excel and prosper like Kadaga.”

Bobi Wine also spotlighted a flagship NUP manifesto pledge: introducing a Home-Grown School Feeding Program for public primary schools.

According to the NUP manifesto, the program will work with Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) and district Community Development Offices to supply hot meals to pupils, sourced locally from smallholder farmers.

The initiative is designed to address the chronic issue of hunger among learners, which hampers concentration, lowers enrollment, and increases dropout rates.

“Hungry learners cannot learn effectively,” the manifesto states.
“Providing hot meals will not only enhance the classroom experience but also boost completion rates and build stronger human capital.”
The programme also promises wider economic benefits.

By purchasing food from local farmers, the policy is expected to stabilize markets, empower women-owned small and medium businesses, and strengthen rural economies. The NUP describes it as an inter-sectoral program, bringing together the education, agriculture, health, trade, and rural development sectors.

Barbie Kyagulanyi also invoked the legacy of Rebecca Kadaga, the former Speaker of Parliament from Busoga, as an example of how quality education can propel local children into national leadership.
