Butambala MP Kivumbi charged with terrorism, remanded

BUTAMBALA.

The Butambala County Member of Parliament Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has been arraigned before the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court, charged and remanded on terrorism charges.

Prosecution has told court that between the 11th and 17th of January 2026, in various places across the country including Gombe and Kibibi Town Council in Butambala District, Kivumbi and others still at large carried out acts aimed at influencing or intimidating the government for political or economic purposes.

The State alleges that the Kivumbi without regard to public safety, orchestrated an attack on Kibibi Police Station and the Butambala Electoral Commission tally centre, damaged sections of the Butambala–Gomba Road, and destroyed several vehicles.

Prosecution, represented by Racheal Bihole, further told court that the alleged acts were prejudicial to national security and resulted in the death of seven people, including Sarah Nagayi, Aisha Nabukenya, Milly Nampereza and Ruth Nakanjako.

Others who died are ; Davis Basaliza , Abdulnoor Nsabu and Shafiq Miiro.

Kivumbi, who is also the National Unity Platform deputy president for Buganda region, was arrested from his home in Buwaate, a Kampala suburb , and detained overnight at Kira Division Police Headquarters before being transferred to Butambala Court .

Kuvumbi contested for the Butambala County parliamentary seat on the NUP ticket, but lost to journalist –turned –politician Eriasa Mukiibi in last week’s elections.

Kivumbi has been driven to the Butambala court under tight security and presented before Chief Magistrate Deo Ssejjemba for formal communication of the charges.

The magistrate has informed Kivumbi that he could not take plea to the terrorism charges because they are capital in nature and can only be tried by the High Court.

Kivumbi has not represented by any lawyer, despite standing the matter over for an hour to allow his advocates appear.

The Chief Magistrate subsequently remanded Kivumbi to Kitalya Prison until February 3rd as police investigations continue.
