China Town, one of Kampala’s fastest growing supermarket chains, has opened its third retail outlet at Freedom City Mall along Entebbe Road, signalling an ambitious expansion drive to bring affordable, quality shopping closer to suburban communities.
The new 10,000 square-foot store officially opened its doors this week, attracting hundreds of shoppers eager to experience what management described as a modern, one stop shopping experience that blends affordability with variety.
Speaking during the launch, Agnes Maggimbi, the supermarket’s Marketing and Public Relations Manager, said the expansion reflects China Town’s commitment to serve a wider section of Ugandans.
“Our goal is to make everyday shopping more convenient while maintaining high standards of service and quality. This store is for everyone, families, small businesses and individual shoppers who want reliable products at fair prices,” Maggimbi said.
The Freedom City branch will stock a wide range of products, from household essentials and electronics to groceries, fashion, and locally made items. Management emphasized that part of the shelf space is dedicated to ‘Made in Uganda’ products, in a move aimed at supporting local manufacturers and promoting domestic enterprise.
To mark the grand opening, the supermarket rolled out promotional giveaways for early shoppers, including electronics, household appliances and a motorcycle. Customers who spent more than UGX 200,000 were entered into a draw, while live performances from local artist Khalifa Aganaga added energy to the event.
Located strategically between Kibuye and Zana, the new branch will serve growing residential and business communities in Makindye, Najjanankumbi, Namasuba, Katwe, and surrounding areas all within easy reach of the busy Entebbe highway corridor.
China Town officials said the expansion aligns with the company’s long-term vision of spreading modern retail infrastructure beyond Kampala’s central business district. The chain’s other stores are in the city centre and in Ntinda and plans are underway to open more outlets in major towns across Uganda.
Consumers welcomed the development, saying it will save them transport costs and time previously spent commuting to central Kampala for shopping.
