Chinese investors have expanded their presence in Uganda’s retail sector with the grand opening of the second Chinatown Supermarket at Akamwesi Mall in Kyebando. The launch event, attended by Miss Uganda, Natasha Nyonyozi, drew massive crowds eager to explore the new store.

Speaking at the event, Director Tommy Peng emphasized the supermarket’s role in creating employment opportunities for Ugandan youth and contributing to the country’s economic growth. He highlighted that the new branch offers a diverse range of affordable household items, attracting a large customer base, particularly women. Peng also revealed plans to expand Chinatown Supermarket to other major cities in Uganda to enhance accessibility to affordable goods.

This is the second and larger Chinatown Supermarket to open in recent months. The first branch was established last year 2024 at the former Game location in Lugogo along Jinja Road, where it has been well received by the public.

The expansion reflects the investors’ commitment to supporting local development and strengthening Uganda’s retail industry. They also expressed gratitude to the Government of Uganda for fostering a favorable investment climate that continues to attract and support both local and international investors.
