The Church of Uganda has announced a major national prayer gathering set to bring together faithful from across the country in a collective appeal for peace, healing and guidance as the nation confronts upcoming elections and natural disasters.
The initiative, declared by Archbishop Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, will run from 19-22 November 2025 at the Anglican Martyrs’ Shrine in Namugongo. The gathering will focus on seeking divine intervention in key national issues including the conduct of peaceful, free and fair elections, relief for communities affected by floods and landslides, and broader calls for national unity.
“This is the time to pray for our country so that we go through peaceful, free and fair elections. I encourage all Ugandans to be peacekeepers,” Archbishop Kazimba stated during the announcement.
He also appealed to political and community leaders to act with honour and restraint so that the political process does not divide the nation, saying:
“Value self-respect and respect for one another. When we uphold dignity and unity, we remain one people because politics is only temporary.”
The archbishop expressed concern over recent floods in Kampala and other districts, as well as deadly landslides, urging local authorities to strengthen infrastructure and drainage systems to protect lives and livelihoods. He also called on the public to avoid reckless behaviour, especially in road travel, following a string of fatal traffic accidents.
The four-day gathering will be led by retired Archbishop Luke Orombi and will invite believers from across denominations to join in worship, reflection and commitment to the common good. Church officials expect hundreds of thousands of participants and parish leaders have been asked to coordinate attendance and logistics at the grassroots level.
The event reflects a broader role of faith institutions in addressing civic and social challenges in Uganda, positioning the Church of Uganda not only as a spiritual leader but also as a catalyst for national healing and solidarity in uncertain times.
