
Fort Portal Tourism City is preparing to host an unforgettable celebration of heritage and creativity as the Hats and Shorts, Empaako Jam 2025 takes place from September 12–14 at the iconic Empaako Village.
The festival comes at a historic moment, coinciding with the 30th Coronation Anniversary of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the youthful and visionary monarch of Tooro Kingdom.
Organized by Akili Ya Afrika, this three-day cultural extravaganza promises a lively mix of art, music, fashion, and tradition. Visitors will not only enjoy entertainment but also have a chance to engage with Uganda’s heritage in meaningful and transformative ways.
At the heart of the event is the Empaako naming ritual, a UNESCO-recognized practice that promotes peace, respect, and community identity. Attendees will be invited to receive an Empaako name, joining a celebration that emphasizes belonging and cultural pride.
“The Empaako Jam is more than just a festival, it is a movement that unites people through culture, creativity, and social impact,” said Ngonzi Wataba, Principal of Akili Ya Afrika.
There will be music Performances like live shows from some of Uganda’s top artists, showcasing the country’s vibrant soundscape, Cultural Experiences like Traditional dances, storytelling, and Tooro Kingdom rituals, Fashion Challenges: like a spotlight on African Klass-Kulture style where creativity with hats and shorts will be rewarded the best-dressed couple wins a special package from Akili Ya Afrika, Creative Exhibitions & Market Spaces like featuring local artisans, eco-conscious products, and sustainability initiatives
This will kick off on Friday, Sept 12 with Roots, Culture & Dancehall, Performances by Mark D Urban, WestSyd, and The Home of Talent, On Saturday sept 13th Empaako Party Culture with High-energy entertainment with CocoFinger and Fefe Bussi and Sunday , The Royal Brunch with a relaxed close to the festival featuring Karol Kasiita, Iryn Hindah, Kahiri, and the legendary John Kaahwa.
Beyond entertainment, the Empaako Jam embraces education and conservation. Proceeds will support library projects in underserved schools and fund a tree-planting campaign to protect local forests.
