
KALUNGU. Equator University of Science and Technology (EQUSat) is set to enroll more medicine and dentistry students this academic year (2025/26), the university vice chancellor Prof. Mohoumad Mpezamihigo has revealed.
According to Prof. Mpezamihigo , the move is aimed at increasing the number of students the university enrolls every year in the medical and dentistry fields.
“Our target is to increase the number of medical students from the current 50 to 100 and we are waiting for the National Council for Higher Education to approve this ,because we have all what it takes to absorb that number ,” Prof Mpezamihigo revealed during the university 1st staff annual party 2025 on Thursday .
The party took place at Bajja Village , Kalungu District, the site where the university owns 82 acres and plans to set up most of its facilities.
Currently , EQUSat is operating in structures erected on a piece of land government donated to the institution at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital .
Prof . Mpezamihigo revealed that they have also applied to NCHE to have the enrollment of dentistry students increased from 15 to 20 every year.
“A team from NCHE came and inspected our facilities in February and we have very high hopes that they are going to give us ago ahead soon .” he added.
Dr Rosie Agoi, the secretary General of Uganda National Commission for UNESCO and also the chairperson of EQUSat appointments committee, asked the university staff to always be ethical and hardworking.
“ Since universities are the highest pillar of education in the country, they should serve the communities where they are operating by addressing the emerging issues affecting the people such as climate change ,this can be done by sensitising communities about the dangers of environment degradation,” she said
The university staff took part in various co-curricular activities such sack racing, bottle filling and quiz among other activities of the day .
EQUSat was established under an agreement between the government of Uganda through the Ministry of Health and the University of Lahore, Pakistani and started enrolling students in 2021. The university uses Masaka Regional Referral Hospital as a teaching hospital.
