EU-Backed Green SME Push: I&M Bank, UGEFA Unveil Support Programme in Kampala




I&M Bank Uganda has launched a partnership with the Uganda Green Enterprise Finance Accelerator (UGEFA), an EU-funded programme, to expand financing and technical support for small and medium enterprises pursuing sustainable and green business models.

Announced at Protea Hotel in Kampala, the collaboration pairs bank financing with targeted business development services for enterprises operating in areas such as clean energy, eco-tourism, sustainable manufacturing, waste management, and green mobility. Organisers said the initiative aims to lower barriers that have kept promising green ventures from scaling.

I&M Bank Uganda Chief Executive Robin Bairstow framed the tie-up as a bid to align capital with environmental and social impact, saying the bank intends to help entrepreneurs adopt cleaner technologies and resilient practices. The bank’s Chief Business Officer Gibson Nangono added that the programme offers a platform for firms already building with sustainability in mind to access tailored support.

From the development partner side, Cristina Bănuţă, Programme Manager at the EU Delegation to Uganda, said extending finance and advisory services to green enterprises is intended to foster inclusive growth and strengthen environmental resilience.The partnership places I&M Bank’s local operations part of the Nairobi-listed I&M Group PLC, inside a broader pipeline that pairs financing with hands-on enterprise support, with the stated goal of accelerating Uganda’s shift toward sustainable business activity
