Five confirmed dead in Kampala-Gulu highway crash

NAKASONGOLA.

A total of five people have been confirmed dead and six others injured in a head-on collision involving two vehicles on the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
The Sunday night crash happened occurred at Kyalweza village in Nakasongola District. According to Mr Sam Twineamazima, spokesperson for the Savannah Region Police, the incident involved a Toyota Hiace, registration number UA 415V, and a Nissan vehicle, registration number UBL 615T.


“It is alleged that motor vehicle Reg. No. UA 415V, driven by an unidentified driver and moving in the direction of Gulu City, crossed his lane while at high speed, colliding with motor vehicle Reg. No. UBL 615T which was driving in the direction of Kampala City from Gulu City,” Mr Twineamazima said on Monday


All five fatalities occurred on the spot, while the six survivors were taken to Kiryandongo Hospital in Kiryandongo District and Nakasongola Health Centre IV for medical attention. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Nakasongola Health Centre IV for postmortem.


The Kyalweza section of the highway is part of a notoriously dangerous stretch between Luweero Town and Migyera in Nakasongola District, marked by several known road crash blackspots.
These include Bujaabe, Kyamukonwa, Namayonjo, Katuugo, Kapaburuli, Nalongo and Kakooge.


At least 11 people have died in crashes along this corridor between May and June 2025, according to police records in the Savannah region.
The Uganda Police’s annual traffic report released in February 2025 showed an increase in nationwide road crashes in 2024. A total of 25,107 road crashes were recorded, up from 23,876 in 2023, representing a 6.4 percent increase.


Mr Twineamazima said investigations into Sunday’s crash are ongoing, and urged drivers to avoid speeding and dangerous overtaking.
