Govt diverts traffic as Karuma–Kamdini Road gets damaged

OYAM . Uganda’s Ministry of Works and Transport has advised motorists to avoid the dangerously deteriorating section of the Karuma-Kamdine Road which has been affected by the ongoing torrential rain.

In a public advisory on Sunday , the ministry said the affected section lies “along the Karuma–Kamdini stretch on the Gulu Highway, approximately 1 km from the Karuma–Oliwyo/Pakwach junction (URA checkpoint, from Kampala side),” and has suffered further damage.

According to the statement, more than half of the road surface has been compromised, making it “unsafe for all traffic.”

The ministry said the failure , which has been spreading steadily, “continues to widen due to the persistent heavy rains impacting the embankment.”

Authorities have since cordoned off the stretch “as we mobilize for emergency restoration works,” the ministry added.

Motorists were cautioned to immediately avoid the dangerous segment. “Motorists are urged to avoid the affected section,” the advisory read.

A full diversion was announced for all categories of vehicles. The ministry has instructed drivers to bypass the failed section by rerouting through the Karuma–Pakwach junction before connecting to Olwiyo Trading Centre.

From there, vehicles should continue to Anaka and proceed to Gulu, a detour covering more than 110 kilometres.

“All vehicles are advised to divert at the Karuma–Pakwach junction (URA checkpoint) and proceed to Olwiyo Trading Centre (approximately 51 Kms), then turn right and continue through Anaka to Gulu (approximately 62 Kms); and vice versa for vehicles from Gulu side heading to Kampala,” the statement said.

Additionally, government pledged to provide continuous updates as emergency restoration unfolds.

“Further updates will be issued as restoration progresses,” the ministry said, adding an apology to travellers affected by the disruption.

“We regret the inconvenience caused.”

The notice was signed by MoTW Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa.

“These programs have no real help for people’s lives” he said.
