Govt postpones closure of Karuma Bridge

KAMPALA: The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced an extended closure of both Karuma and Ayago Bridges until Monday, March 17, 2025, with a planned reopening on April 7, 2025. This extension is necessary to complete crucial repairs on the Masindi Port Ferry, a vital alternative route for motorists.

“To facilitate the installation of expansion joints as scheduled, Karuma and Ayago Bridges will remain closed to all traffic,” the ministry stated.

Motorists traveling between Kampala and Gulu or West Nile are advised to use the Luwero-Kafu-Masindi-Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park)-Pakwach route or proceed via Olwiyo. Travelers heading to Lira from Kampala should take the Iganga-Nakalama-Tirinyi-Pallisa-Kumi-Soroti-Lira route.

The ministry urges public patience during this period. “We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation,” the statement read.

Karuma Bridge, a critical link on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, sustained significant damage due to wear and tear last year. Urgent repairs were initiated in 2024 after signs of structural fatigue emerged, leading to a partial closure. While reopened to light vehicles in December 2024 for the festive season, full repairs are now underway.

Ayago Bridge, on the Karuma-Olwiyo Road, is also undergoing expansion joint installation due to fatigue-related damage.
