
JINJA. Government has announced that it will establish a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) university in the near future .
According to the plan , the university is aimed at strengthening vocational education and equip the youth with skills for industrial and technological growth.
The announcement was made by Dr Eddy Turyateemba, Assistant Commissioner for Vocational Education at the Ministry of Education and Sports, while representing Permanent Secretary Dr Kedrace Turyagyenda during the third graduation ceremony of Busoga International Polytechnic (BIP) in Jinja City.
Dr Turyagyenda said the initiative is intended to position vocational education as a critical pathway to innovation, employment, and national productivity.
“You are the custodians of transformation. The knowledge, skills, and values you impart shape the future of our youth and our nation,” he told 158 graduates receiving Level Two Diplomas in electrical engineering, plumbing, building and construction, welding, and oil and gas.
The proposed university will harmonize different levels of vocational training and provide a clear academic progression route for artisans, technicians, and technologists.
Dr Turyateemba urged graduates to apply their skills to create jobs and support national development, stressing that practical training is central to Uganda’s vision for a self-reliant economy.
Seith Muhumuza, Stakeholder Management Officer at the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), highlighted the potential of vocational graduates in driving technological innovation and competing in the global labour market.
“Students who apply for internship training at PAU have demonstrated great potential,” he said, encouraging graduates to register with professional associations to increase visibility and employment prospects locally and internationally.
Graduates at BIP leave with a Business and Technology Education Council certificate, recognized internationally.
Reham Mustafa, Director of the institute, said the polytechnic addresses youth unemployment by fostering self-reliance, creativity, and practical skills.
Elias Kisambira, Jinja District Education Officer, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to reducing youth unemployment through hands-on training under the new curriculum.
