MASAKA. Security forces have mounted heavy roadblocks at all roads connecting to Masaka City centre to bar National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine from entering the city
There was heavy deployment of police and army personnel in Nyendo town, Masaka, on Saturday as security forces moved to block National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi from accessing Masaka’s central business area ahead of his scheduled campaign rallies.
Kyagulanyi, who has so far addressed the first rally Masaka Sazza Grounds in Nyendo–Mukungwe Constituency—was stopped at the Nyendo entry point, a traditional gateway into Masaka City used by many presidential candidates in past elections.
Masaka Sub-Region Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said the restriction was agreed upon during prior engagements with Kyagulanyi’s team, insisting the decision was necessary to prevent disruption of business activities in the city centre.
“We agreed with his team that they would use the Mbarara Bypass instead of passing through the central business district,” Kasirye said.
“Our aim is to allow business to continue smoothly in Masaka City. We do not want unnecessary congestion or disruption.”
However, NUP supporters in Masaka condemned the move, calling it discriminatory and unfair compared to how previous presidential candidates were handled.
“This is our city, and we have a right to welcome our candidate,” said one frustrated supporter in Nyendo.
“All former presidential candidates, including Dr Kizza Besigye and Amama Mbabazi, entered Masaka through Nyendo without being blocked. Why is it only Kyagulanyi being treated this way?”
Surprisingly , ruling National Resistance Movement flag bearer Yoweri Museveni who is expected to campaign in Masaka City on December 22 ,will stage his rally at Liberation Square where Kyagulanyi was blocked . Currently the Liberation Square is being guarded by soldiers .
Another supporter described the deployment as an intimidation tactic: “They are trying to scare people, but we shall still show support for our candidate. This level of security is unnecessary.”
The heavy deployment caused significant disruption in parts of Masaka City. Many shops remained closed throughout the morning, and several streets appeared deserted as residents expressed uncertainty about the situation.
Kyagulanyi was still expected to proceed with his planned rallies later in the day despite the restrictions and heightened tension in the city.
Kyagulanyi is yet to address another rally at Kyajubira Grounds in Kimaanya–Kabonera Constituency led by Dr Abed Bwanika who abandoned NUP to join the newly formed Democratic Front headed by Mathias Mpuuga.
