Kampala, Uganda | May 13, 2025 – Makindye West Member of Parliament, Allan Ssewanyana, is once again facing terrorism-related charges, alongside four others, following the filing of an amended charge sheet by Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo at the International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court.
The revised charges were presented before Justice Alice Komuhangi Khauka, who outlined the fresh accusations connected to the 2021 bijambiya killings—a spate of machete attacks that left over 30 people dead and several others injured in the districts of Kampala, Rakai, and Masaka.
Notably, the new charge sheet omits the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, who had previously been listed among the suspects.
The prosecution alleges that MP Ssewanyana was involved in the killings of Kizza Mugerwa, Sulaiman Kakooza, and Tadeo Kiyimba, as well as the attempted murder of Ronald Sebyoto, all residents of Ssettaala village in Masaka. He also faces a separate charge of aiding and abetting terrorism, accused of financially supporting the attackers.
While terrorism is the main charge, the state has added alternative counts of murder, attempted murder, and terrorism-related support, should the primary charge not be proven in court.
Justice Komuhangi deferred the taking of pleas, citing the need to review crucial evidence, including crime scene photographs, forensic reports, and witness statements. A ruling on whether the suspects will be committed to stand trial is scheduled for August 26, 2025.
MP Ssewanyana is currently out on bail, while his co-accused—Mike Sserwadda, Jackson Kanyike, Bull Wamala, and John Mugerwa—remain in custody at Luzira Prison.
