KABALE. National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi , has vowed to free all political prisoners and restore justice and accountability once elected president.
Speaking at a campaign rally at Kabale Main Stadium, Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine said his government would prioritize respect for human rights and the rule of law, beginning with the release of individuals detained for political reasons.
“We cannot speak of democracy when our comrades are languishing in prisons and safe houses simply because they hold different views,” Kyagulanyi said.
“People like Dr. Kizza Besigye, Eddy Mutwe, and many others have suffered persecution for standing up for freedom. Once we take power, all political prisoners will be released unconditionally.”
He accused the government of criminalizing dissent and using state institutions to silence opponents.
“Those who speak out against injustice are branded as enemies of the state. But we shall prove that Uganda belongs to all citizens, not a few individuals who think they are above the law,” he added.
Kyagulanyi also condemned the harassment of his supporters during campaign activities in Lira, Mbarara, and other districts, saying several have been detained without trial.
“I have visited families whose sons and daughters were arrested for wearing our red colors. Some were beaten, others disappeared. We are here to say enough is enough,” he said.
The NUP leader further criticized the government’s performance on infrastructure and economic management, saying that despite decades in power, Uganda still struggles with poor roads and limited opportunities.
“After almost 40 years, we still have impassable roads and underdeveloped regions. Uganda loses trillions through corruption — money that could build schools, hospitals, and create jobs,” he said.
Kyagulanyi pledged to build a new Uganda founded on justice, transparency, and opportunity for all citizens.
“Our liberation will not be through guns but through unity and the ballot. We are ready to build a country where no one is jailed for thinking differently,” he said amid cheers from the crowd.
