
The Karuma and Ayago Bridges are set to reopen to all traffic on Monday, April 14, 2025, following a closure that began on March 24, 2025, for emergency repairs.
According to Susan Kataike, Senior Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport, “The Ministry has concluded installation of expansion joints on Karuma and Ayago bridges.
Final Preparations
Before the bridges reopen, the contractor will install solar lighting and cat eyes on Saturday and Monday. Barriers will be removed on Sunday evening to allow traffic to resume on Monday, April 14, 2025.

Alternative Routes
During the closure, motorists used alternative routes recommended by the Ministry ¹:
- Kampala to Gulu or West Nile: Luwero-Kafu-Masindi-Paraa route or via Olwiyo to Gulu
- Kampala to Lira: Iganga-Nakalama-Tirinyi-Pallisa-Kumi-Soroti-Lira route
The Ministry of Works and Transport has assured the public that the repairs will enhance the safety and durability of the bridges
