Kasese Diocese seeks Shs4.5b for 2026 Martyrs Day celebrations

KASESE.

The Kasese Catholic Diocese has officially launched preparations for the 2026 Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, which will be held at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine ,Wakiso District on June 3.

This will be a significant event for the diocese, as it has been over two decades since they last hosted the national pilgrimage in 2005.

Speaking at the launch ceremony on Sunday at Our Lady of Assumption Kasese Cathedral, Bishop Francis Aquirinus Kibira of Kasese Diocese emphasised the importance of prayer and generosity in supporting the celebrations.

“We are here to officially launch our preparations for our turn to animate the Uganda Martyrs celebrations this year. We have begun with prayer because everything comes from God. Our hearts should wholeheartedly give towards God’s work,” he said.

The diocese is seeking Shs4.5 billion to facilitate the event, and has established 16 sub-committees to mobilise resources and coordinate activities.

A special bank account has been opened at Centenary Bank, Kasese branch, to receive contributions. The eastern zone of the diocese has already raised Shs60 million, while the western zone will hold a fundraising drive on April 12.

Bishop Kibira urged Christians to support the preparations, saying, “Let us not look at this budget as a burden. I know people have many responsibilities, but this function will attract blessings for our district, our children, and our families.”

He also called for reconciliation and unity among Christians, saying, “We from Kasese will be special pilgrims to Namugongo, so we must first prepare ourselves spiritually through confession and reconciliation.”

The bishop noted that the preparations come at a time when the diocese is also constructing a multi-billion shilling cathedral, which has now reached the roofing stage.

“I know some of you are wondering why we are fundraising for Namugongo when our cathedral is not yet complete. With God’s grace, we shall roof it by the end of April,” Bishop Kibira said.

The chief guest, Benjamin Cadet Buturo, commended the people of Kasese for conducting peaceful elections and urged parents to prioritize their children’s education.

“Kasese is in my heart. You cared for my uncle, Egidio Nkaijanabwo, and I once stayed here during my internship. Whenever you need support, do not hesitate to invite me,” he said.

Benson Kule Baritazale, the Prime Minister of the Rwenzururu Kingdom, also emphasised the importance of peace and unity, saying, “We cannot achieve development without peace in our homes. Unity and reconciliation are key for social transformation.”

The Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations attract millions of pilgrims from across Uganda and neighbouring countries who gather at Namugongo to commemorate the Uganda martyrs who were killed by Kabaka Mwanga for their faith.
